Spam storm

    • We are obviously in the middle of another video link spam storm, which overwhelms our latest posts and hot topics feeds with garbage spam posts, and makes it very difficult for our existing forum members, let alone newcomers, to find current forum topics of interest. Our failure to properly police this problem is extremely discouraging to new forum members, who upon arrival see a bunch of useless link spam, and often depart. New members are the lifeblood of this forum; when we lose them, we all lose.

It would be helpful if all forum members took responsibility for reporting spam posts as soon as you see them (hover your cursor over the bottom right corner of a post, and click on the "!" exclamation point icon when it appears in order to initiate a report).

It would also be helpful if all currently online forum moderators would take a more active interest in policing spam. It's one of the reasons you have the extra buttons.

Moreover, is it not about time for Bytro Labs to finally address this problem in an institutional manner, via various filters and blocks, instead of ignoring the problem and pretending it's going away? If you're going to have a player forum, then you need to effectively police its environment. This problem has festered far too long with no action. It's time to step up and do something about it.

The problem is addressed by the most effective method: The volunteer team!

Forum users reporting it certainly is a great help, as it highlights the problem threads for us to remove more quickly. We also go through the new forum threads to remove the posts that were not reported.

@Sasri knows about this issue in the past, and has alerted the developers. They are still working on the issue and looking into ways to keep the advertisers out of the forum.

I hope so, but this issue has been around for longer than a year, there has been no movement yet to produce a software filter solution, and we cannot expect Roko and a handful of other active volunteer moderators to stay on top of the problem 24/7. When the spam storms come, as they did this weekend, deleting spam and blocking the spam accounts requires a full-time online presence.

Ask Roko, Daviddu and Jewbear how many they deleted and blocked in the last 60 hours. It's got to be a pain in the a-- for the handful of active moderators, especially when they're supposed to be using their available volunteer time to actively manage forum and chat comments. We clearly need an institutional solution; otherwise, you're going to burn out your best moderators dealing with this problem ---- or allow the spammers to overwhelm your players forum.
