I think banning from an event is way too harsh a punishment. There are chances of using gold by accident, some menus don't offer a "confirm you want to use gold warning" such as when you want to produce or build something without having the necessary resources.
To then lose a whole game's worth of time and effort is way over the top IMHO. Mods need to be aware that some players have spent hours tending to the game over a number of days. To have that thrown out the window is way over the topif you've commited a simple mistake.
Bans not only punish the gold user but also his coalition and those near him who all of a sudden have an AI that might go one or another. For example it can be aggressive or allow a neighbouring player to gain an advantage by fighting an AI and not a decent player. There was talk of allowing the impregnable areas of a Dominion map to become available if the player became inactive. Well the developers stated that this could be giving a big advantage to a player who is lucky enough to have some player go inactive next to him. Surely this logic also applies to banning a player in a community event!
Game Operators need to consider how much gold was used and then dish out a punishment that is appropriate to how much and how that gold was used. Most times it's a misclick to gain resources or produce a unit. Well in those cases the player can get a fine equivalent to 3x or 5x the amount of resources or perhaps told to march his unit and some extras off to the edge of the map never to be used again.
I find that mods nowadays are getting a bit heavy handed both in chat and in games and ruining the experience for some.
