Wrong. Planes on the ground defend as planes, except during the few minutes they are refueling.
This was discussed earlier today. Read the other most recent thread here in this section.
There are also a lot of good guides that will answer your questions. Read all of the pinned messages at the top of this forum, and then ask questions. You will get a lot better grasp of the game mechanics that way, rather than a bit at a time.War is a game that is played with a smile. If you can't smile, grin. If refueling 5
If fueled they have their normal HP"A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week." - General George S. Patton, Jr.
"Do, or do not. There is no try" - Yoda -
When planes are refueling for 5 to 15 minutes after landing they are fragile and easily killed. 5 hit points and no defense value.
I explained this a couple hours ago: Check this thread:

If the planes are in a province without at least one ground unit and it gets captured, the planes turn into convoys.
-
@Lawrence Czl I think he was attacking the planes with bombers. Bombers can not capture provinces, so the planes will only turn into convoys if the airfield disappears from the map."A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week." - General George S. Patton, Jr.

Yes. Players just need to be aware that if they leave planes in a province without ground troops, the enemy can just roll in and destroy the airplanes. I had a human player with 278 provinces leave 14 Tac bombers undefended. I was able to destroy them after capturing the province without any losses.

So send in any ground unit not planes and capture the province. The planes will become a convoy which has no fighting strength.
