    • AI Navy Question

I have a question about the AI Navies. So, I have been near Sweden watching their Navy, Sweden is AI and doesn't move around much, This Fleet started off with a single destroyer, I came back the next day that same fleet had two more destroyers, next day two more, then today the fleet had nine destroyers. This fleet hasn't moved and is out in the ocean, so how the heck does this fleet keep multiplying? Just a question I had, Thanks!

Several AI countries on the 22-player map are notorious for building stupidly large navies, when they are given the opportunity to do so . . . .

      1. Sweden and Finland will build large fleets of cruisers, destroyers, and to a lesser degree, submarines. They will usually keep their fleets in the Baltic, but this can present challenges for an unprepared human player who attempts an amphibious invasion of either country, or attempts to reinforce an existing invasion via convoy.

      2. If left undisturbed for most of the game, Spain will sometimes build a large navy, including battleships and aircraft carriers.

      3. Algeria likes to build cruisers. Ditto for Morocco.

      4. Ireland likes to build submarines and destroyers and then sends them to Sicily and southern Italy.

      5. Yugoslavia likes to build cruisers and destroyers and then sends them to the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, which is even weirder than an Irish navy.

      6. Germany likes to send a destroyer squadron or two to Chesapeake Bay, just to mess with the Northern United States human player.

      7. Egypt usually has a submarine squadron or two lurking in the Red Sea in order to catch anyone foolish enough to capture half of the country and then send an unescorted convoy across that body of water.

      8. The weirdest thing I have seen on the 22-player map, however, is Canada and the Northern United States producing battleships on the land-locked Great Lakes.

      9. And then there's my favorite on the 50-player Pacific map: Northern Siberia. This AI country will build a new destroyer or submarine squadron every other day, and send them to the Yellow Sea and Sea of Japan between China, Japan and Korea. Which can be a real surprise for an Asian country that attacks the southern end of Northern Siberia, thinking it presents no issues for its navy in the coastal Pacific because Northern Siberia's ports are all on the Arctic Ocean.

    • At some point in the recent past there may have been an alteration to the AI code, as I have been seeing units and tactics by the AI that I did not see a year ago when I started playing COW. Yesterday I had to deal with multiple level 6 Cruisers, Destroyers and Subs in the Baltic produced by Germany. I am playing Sweden and have seen no indication of them traveling to North America, which is different from Montana's observations. They were stationed in 3 groups between Konigsberg, Germany and Turku, Finland. I believe one stack was a new production rally point as it contained only one cruiser likely produced in Konigsberg.

As for your Swedish AI observation, how many ports does Sweden have? The country has significant port potential with a total of 13 provinces adjacent to water on the 22 player map. If they are producing just 2 DD a day, that could be a very reasonable number, especially as all 5 of their starting Industrial Complexes are in coastal provinces.

Put some subs further out from the stack and check back regularly. I believe you will eventually see them moving new production out to your observed stack.
