  • Players League basic rules and outlines

    Hello all,

As organiser of the PL games in Call of War, I would like to post the basic rules and ideas regarding Players League games.

First of all, everyone is welcome to join as of now. The League needs more players. When its popularity is high enough, I will enforce a few barriers based on rank for instance - (very) new players have a higher probability to go inactive and we dont want that.

*edit* In a seperate thread you will find the league standings. Everyone that got at least 1 point will be added. Please say so if I somehow have forgotten you. Points are given out to the top 4 still active. Not active at endgame means no points. 1st - 7 points 2nd 4 points - 3rd 2 points - 4th 1 point. Ive picked this so that winning is encouraged as much as staying active till the end - even with 1 province!

But what is this...Players League then?

The PL originated in CoW predecessor game Supremacy1914, with 2 goals:

1: Gold free games so everyone has to fight on equal terms, by gentlemens agreement
2: People stay active, even when faced with adversity. We all know how...challenging random games are (not). If you cant spare the 2 months that is a PL game in your free time - dont sign up then.

3 (suggestion) : It is encouraged to have no more then 2 allies, but normally not a strict rule. Its out of practical reason - only 3 people max can finish a game. Do you want to be that poor sod that is the 4th ally?

High Command is allowed and even encouraged - its a relative fair way to support Bytro for making this game when ingame advantages are concerned compared to the pay2win feature that is Gold. It is my personal hope that Gold is eventually banned from this game and replaced with something more sustainable keeping the precious balance between company profit and fair games for all - which ironically would mean the PL becomes obsolete.

Everything goes in the PL regarding ingame play. Backstabbing, bit of newspaper slander etc. Just keep it civilized and keep your cool. Especially if you want to play PL games in the future - strategic wargamers have long memories;).

    ...Think, before you stab.

One exception - pure bug abusing is not allowed. Of course I cant monitor everything regarding that, I am appealing to your good sportsmanship.

PL games will have per game house rules on regular occassion. Commonly liked per game house rules might become permanent. The houserules can be suggested to me by players. Be creative in what you think would be a fun addition.

Lastly, I hope to find someone with mad excel/google docs skills to make a PL 'ladder'. Elo-based is my personal preference. After all, if you play PL games regularly, you want to see how you stack up against the other PL players right?

  • I would try the Google docs, I've done work on them before. Do you just mean a table e.g.

    1. Xarus with win/loss ratio 500/1
    2. BBB with win/loss ratio 250/1
    3. Miech with win/loss ratio 10/1
Obviously it would be different but would it be like that or something else?

like butterball bill said google docs is proberly the easiest and best way, google sheets in particular

but we could take monthly turns running it, or even weekly turns running it.

  • The advantage of google docs is that multiple people can write in it.

In 1914 somebody made a nice document - perhaps you could check it out for inspiration? He used some sort of code to create an ELO ranking per game, depending on who plays - top players will give a higher game rating coefficient. The formula is there...somewhere.

Since I am mediocre at best with excel stuff, I will skip on that part and defer to more qualified people for the how-to.

@ BBB: well, sort of. Personally I find a win-loss a bit too one dimensional (referring to ELO), because I consider it important who you defeated in a particular PL game. Some people are harder to beat;)

Maybe if we have K/D ratio and then a kind of, how do I put it, a wall for our enemies heads? For example:

Xarus: 5/1 kill death ratio. Notable victories: BBB(3), Miech(1)

  • Maybe the top 10 players are worth 3 victories and the players ranking from 11-20 are worth two? You get an extra point as well for every extra opponent you beat you in a multi front war e.g. winning a two front war against players 1 and 19 would earn you 6 points.

  • In Thirty Kingdoms, I run the Players League and we keep a simple standings page. Top four players in each round score points as follows, 1st - 5, 2nd - 3, 3rd - 2, 4th - 1. I post the results of each game in the games thread and keep one thread in the forums with the standings. We are entering our 7th game there now. Look it over Miech, its not hard and does not require google docs or any outside the forum work. Our players league there is call Forsaking the Stone, so look at any of the threads with that title.
  • Hi Nim, that sounds great. Sometimes you need others to point out that your own ideas are too farfetched.

I think I will use that idea and post it in this thread in my FiPo (I can imagine mods dont take too kindly with me cluttering up the forum with 20 different PL threads:P )

*edit* whilst looking how Nim does it in 30K, I changed my mind about a seperate thread:)
