Most Useless Troop in the game?

    • Normally, we will not give strong comments on a specific unit because all of them are useful. But I think antiair is just not as useful as the others. They cannot attack, they can only defend. What is the chance that the plane will come? But anyways if you have enough reasons maybe you can convince me!

    • Thanks for your honest opinion Ryan ... You are telling that to a guy whose planes have taken many hits from AA units, and given likewise to opponents with my AA units ... Most experienced players (and I have played with guys at level >70 and folks with over 100 wins in their belts) will use a number of AA units in their games- perhaps 10% of their ground units.

After some thought, and for its high price in time and resources, I'll say aircraft carriers are the worst, at least early in the game, when they can only carry naval bombers, which are only effective vs. subs ... I recently was told that higher levels of aircraft carriers can carry fighters and tac bombers. So it's possible that I may change my mind in the future ... :whistling:

The post was edited 1 time, last by gusv: specified 'my' AA units ().

    • The level of the carrier isn't what matters, it's the level of the planes. Any CV can carry naval bombers and inty's from level 1. Level 4+ tactical bombers are able to use CV's as well. The level of the CV determines how many planes it can handle, not what type.

Also, to remain on topic, Militia. Slow, only capable of decent fighting in hills/forests, waste of food, goods, and manpower.

    • Cruisers, the most pointless unit in the game. It's outclassed by the somewhat costlier Battleship and very vulnerable to subs. A cruiser-destroyer combo may work but a battleship-destroyer combo is infinitely better. By trying to be in the middle it's neither effective at this, or that.

    • Paratroopers - I have seen a case where para's have stormed a player's cores by taking unoccupied level-2 airbases one after another ie land at the first one in range - airbase becomes damaged but still functional - move next para into that airbase and launch a paradrop on the next level-2 airbase in range - repeat until core cities well and truly trashed. Of course this does not work if even one AA is defending the airbase - (so as an aside AA are pretty darn useful - level-3 AA are 7 strength points which pretty much guarantees a newly captured city does not rebel so I automatically build one in a newly captured IC if there is time for it to be finished before next day change - also as an air-mad player I know the deterrent against air power of a stack of 10 or so AA so I make a lot of them - up to 25% of my final army will be AA).
So paratroops can be useful in fast over the sea strikes against unoccupied territory but it is a lot of resources to get them so they have a useful range.
    • The way I play I almost never make:
Militia - way too slow for me and they consume too much food
Tank Destroyers - too slow for my mobile stacks
Heavy Tanks - again pretty slow and too much research needed especially as the later research tree is now so expensive in time

I guess this mostly says that I enjoy moving fast and have not time for the slower species of units!!

My favourite would have to be (apart from planes) SP Arty supported by SPAA

AA is one of the most usefull units in the game. Every player that knows this game a bit will use tactical bombers and bomb any army in sight. If you have a good amount of AA you will shoot those planes out of the sky. I always make sure that i have a decent amount of AA in a stack as protection against enemy air attack.

Militia has been much discussed but it is a great damage absorber, you put a few in your stack and all your other troops will last longer. Militia combined with a couple of AA and anti tank make a decent border protection. When in need and under attack, militia is produced very fast and can defend your core provinces just until the cavalery arrives. Level 1 militia is in defense stronger then infantry level 1 in offense. When you are attacked militia is the perfect unit to train as you have extra troops that are powerful in defense right away.

Cruisers are amazing, they are very resistant against subs and trash destroyers. As a early unit with NB level 2 as building requirement pretty easy to produce and you can kill the early game naval units rather easily. Battleships are late game units and cost a lot of units. What i like to do is lock battleships into combat with a couple of subs so they can't fire at my ships anymore and then move in with cruisers and or destroyers and bombard the battleship to scraps while it's locked in combat with the subs.

There are no useless troops, only inflexible players. Every unit has its function, you just need to know when to use it and when not.

I partially. agree with you but there may be no useless unit. But there may be a not as useful unit for you in a specific case

As far as my knowledge of the mechanics goes, AA are also useful to destroy interceptors out on patrol . I had once sent an interceptor with 100% condition over an AI's capital which housed a AA gun . Immediately after the AA gun came within the patrol circle of my interceptor, the condition of the interceptor came down to 66% . Thankfully they didn't shoot it down . This action did not cause war, surprisingly .

    • All units have a use, some generally (e.g., light tanks) but others for specific purposes (militia - primarily defensive). Choice of units is mainly determined by style of play. Defensive players produce a different mixture of units than their aggressive opponents. Bottom line though, units must serve a military objective AND be affordable. Because I tend to be aggressive, I'll always make Arty, tanks and air force. If the round lasts long enough, then SP Arty and rockets. Any others would be produced for the local situation.

This has worked so well that I rarely produce Militia, TD, HT, Strats or Secret (except rockets), but I don't consider these "useless". Just haven't played in a situation where they are more useful than what I already make.

Yes, they all have specific purpose but we are discussing which is the most useless which always result in arguments and I think the best way of preventing it is to close this thread

There are only arguments when someone doesn't respect the opinions of others.

Most useless unit (for me) is the strategic bomber. In all my time playing, I don't remember ever producing any. Then again, I've never made a paratrooper either.
    • Dinkleburg441 wrote:

Strategic bombers. They are good for scouting I guess but that's about it. They are way too vulnerable to interceptors and cost way too much to actually be used for strategic warfare.
The strategical bomber is the best unit to destroy fortifications and industrial complexes. Of course any bomber needs to be escorted by interceptors.
