    • Unit names - naval and air

As an ex Naval Wargamer I wonder could we consider a slightly different set up for naval and air unit naming.

With the larger naval units you can name them but that is only referred to in the newspaper. However I think this is an opportunity missed. Ships are like towns and provinces, we should if you want be able to name any of them.

If you dont want to name them they should certainly be given id numbers as such so:

Destroyers are DD1, DD2 etc The number stays with the ship so if it is lost that number is not re-used.
      Submarines are S1 etc
      Cruisers are C1 etc
      Battleships are BB1 etc
      Aircraft Carriers R1 etc

I think the problem is that where a ground force is a batallion, regiment whatever and constitutes a number of soldiers or tanks ships are not. You could group them into Battlegroups/squadrons but one ship doesnt make a squadron.

Similarly with aircraft. What you could do with that is make a standard 100% = 10 planes so if it is 60% you have only 6 planes left. 0-9% = damaged aircraft. So when you build planes you building batches of ten.

We then allocate them to squadrons or make a new squadron.
    • Currently, the unit names are per country. If all destroyers has DD as the prefix, there would be multiple DD 1s, and players wouldn’t be able to search for specific units.

    • I think you misunderstand a quite simple change. Instead of the 4th Bulgarian Destroyer Squadron it would be DD1 and if Bulgaria wanted to name the ship he/she could.

It is only the 4th because it was the next force created with the next lowest number available. The previous 4th might have been an infantry battalion.

So I dont see how the 4th Bulgarian Destroyer Squadron now renamed Bulgarian Destroyer DD1 would cause a problem. You get an understanding of the problem when you group them together, you lose the individual ship's identity unless it is the most important ship in the group. You could have a second tier with all groupings. So a group of ships might be a squadron and so on. That's how Task Force 1942 handled it some 26 years ago.

To me it seems the game is dominated by army wallahs who dont quite get air or naval wargaming and I dont overly have a problem with that but the naval bit is somewhat pants and submarine warfare at times ludicrous.
    • But the 1st Soviet Destroyer Squadron would also be DD1. And if Bulgaria and the Soviet Union had Share Map, and the player controlling the Soviet Union tried to search for their 1st Destroyer Squadron by typing Ctrl + F, and then typing in DD1, would the Bulgarian destroyer or the Soviet destroyer show up?

    • What I mean is the search function. In the search function, you don't type the affiliation, only the code. So, Soviet DD1 and Bulgarian DD1 would have no difference in the search.

    • For example, I can type K1, and I will get the 1st Light Tank Brigade (Germany), even if I am Mongolia.

    • IDK about the prefixes because they don't make sense for every language. Germans would obviously want their submarines to have the U prefix, and in French a battleship is a cuirassé. The Royal Navy used to label their destroyers as I-XXX before changing to D-XXX. In many countries, such as the aforementioned France and anyone with small navies, it's not customary to use something like USS / HMS / SMS

One thing I would like to see implemented is lowering the status of battleships below those of aircraft carriers so that it is subsumed under a "carrier group" rather than carriers being part of a "battle group". Argument can be made that battleships were capital ships, but to me it just looks weird that currently carriers look like mere escort ships for your Yamatos and Bismarcks of the world ...

    • Battleships are, in fact, capital ships. They were up to the time period this game takes place the epitome of the capital ship.

Most of the world's carriers at the time were escort carriers. It wasn't until 1942 before carriers even began to be considered capital ships, much less the standard of being so.

well, I like that idea, as I got my friends and myself to searched for a 6th medium tank div, turned out it was destroyed but prob buried under my reports of building builds and was replaced by a Matilda that became the 6th.

ps: I’m not a naval war gamer but I play WOT blitz for your info
Don’t judge people by their records or their rank, but however their skill; and the kindness.

the game should be played happily and not too aggressively.
