Hey guys, to be completely honest with you: There is basically a 0% chance that the old Canvas mode will return, sorry.

But there is a good chance that we will keep improving the new WebGL mode further. Your feedback will help in that regard.
By the way, the WebGL version was available for nearly 2 years now and we had already many feedback cycles with many players, and also you had the chance already to chime in before Canvas was turned off. But of course it is never too late for good feedback, so we will still listen now and will consider it when we do our next changes.

Just do me one favor: Please play with the new mode for a day or two and try to get accustomed to it. This will help to focus the feedback on real issues that are really important because it will be impossible to accomodate for all opinions that are basically just "I dont like it because it is different".

I also noticed that some players gave feedback before realizing that it was already accounted for and that they just did not find out how to do it in the new version yet. For example one feedback is that players dont like the new map colors and want it like the old version -> we already have a political view mode which colors the map like in the old version, you can activate it in the settings (bottom right menu, turn off relation mode). Another feedback was that city names are always inthe way of armies -> if you zoom in closer the city names actually vanish so there is always a way to see the armies clearly. These are just examples and thats why fuly exploring and playing with the new mode is important before jumping the gun.

In that sense, if you want to give feedback after you played it for a while, please try to be specific and show exact situations (with a screenshot) and a description what should be improved about it and why. We will collect such examples for further improvement rounds in the future.

To give you some more reasoning:
We always planned to do this at some point after introducing the WebGL mode ~2 years ago, and we kept supporting Canvas for these 2 years even though we wanted to shut it down eventually. From a code standpoint supporting Canvas is just slowing us down too much, it makes feature implementation slower, QA testing slower and increases the number of potential bugs. The old mode is also not how we ourselves envision the game in today's day and age. We rather want to focus on improving the new technology and keep Call of War state of the art.
We also run QA tests on the new version all the time and it is even playable on weaker devices. Most problems stem from either really old ones or not-up-to-date software&drivers. But if you experience problems in this regard, our support team can help you with troubleshooting.

From a usage standpoint Canvas users were a small minority nowadays, the vast majority already plays in WebGL (we tracked this and we wouldnt have done this step if this wasnt the case). I know it might feel different because long time players tend to favor canvas as they are used to it, and those players also tend to be more active in forums/chats and be vocal about their opinion.
It always hurts to take something away from some players, we rather want to focus on the vast version that the majority uses.

TL;DR: Canvas won't come back, we want to improve the new version instead with your help.
Its not Canvas slowing you down, but because your balls made of steel. I mean, you guys just lost so much users in one day, you must be very rich or very crazy, i quess your concurents have new christmass day.

At first, i just wanted to write you some words, who starting with F... and give you slap. Because this is how we feel, who play your game this long, like you give us slap.

I give you some tips, just to understund minority like you say. We play your game, not because of graphics, if we chose game by graphics, we will play EU4, or others games. There is alot with better graphics...

This, what you did is disrecpect to all people who love this game, and play this game every day, like me. You just one sided decide to change, not even ask us about this.

I buy High Command every month, and sometimes gold, this is not much, but i believe there is more people like me, who will quit this game after this. And i also believe, new players not buy gold, its veterans who love this game an pay money.

So, today you just say F*** you veterans, we go for new generation.
And veterans like me, will respond you: F*** you too, we go play others games.

This is last me post here, good luck :)

How do you justify this as progress? Do you really not care how your product looks? I've tried the different modes available for the PC and it just isn't appealing visually.

And Freezy, If I truly don't get any other option, I would like a refund of my most recent purchase. This change was not disclosed or announced or I would not have made said purchase.

I've tried to use the new mode and I just generally don't like it. I think its because of the Icons. I liked being able to see the individual units as their image instead of an icon. Also i agree when what another user said about the reason being people didnt use the old version because the new one was set on default. I introduced two of my friends to the game a four or five months ago and after showing them the old version they liked it much more. So if your reasoning for changing it is because more people used the new version its is not a true test of which they like more. Im trying to be respectful about this (others seem to lack this) but it is very discouraging. The least you guys could have done is gave use a heads up that this change was coming.

I agree with this completely. It felt like a giant middle finger. I've spent quite a bunch on HC and some gold. Ive even introduced two of my friends who also spent some money on the game. The lack of care for us even if we are the minority appalls me;The remove of the old graphics did not make up my mind for me, the absence of care for us did. Maybe I will eventually come back but I doubt it.

Edit: At the end of the day it is just a game. I have enjoyed playing it for a bit more then half a decade. I have made some good friends and strengthen old ones. Its just sad to see it end this way.

  • So, I see the game developers saying old won't come back - change is hard, etc. OK. It is what it is. And, you want productive criticism to build from. My main reason for not liking the change is that the screen is not player friendly. It's way too busy and detracts from the important info I want to see quickly, especially from a zoomed out view - say I have control over many countries. It's hard to see where I have multiple units, what types of units to strategically decide where to move them. I've seen your response to this - zoom in. But, again, when I control large amounts of territory, you're essentially asking me to zoom in to each "pocket" of troops to figure out what's there, then the next, then the next, and remember each to then decide where to move next.

Take a look at this screenshot of my current game. Yes, the screenshot may not be super clear, but you still get the idea here. How am I supposed to make sense of this at a glance. It's very frustrating for me and my biggest gripe. If you were able to fix this somehow, I'm fine with change and will go with the flow.

    Screenshot

I remember when Battle Pirates changed its canvas and the players freaked out. I honestly had no gripe with the change because the play area remained crystal clear - I just had to get used to a few new things. This is different, it's not just getting used to it - the issue here is affecting play of the game.

I'm glad you're trying to focus on productive comments and criticism and tuning out the rest. I want to keep playing this game but I know in the long run I won't if issues like this aren't addressed. I really hope you address them.
  • problem is they dont listen. If maintaining two was hard ENHANCED should have been removed.
The reason more people use enhanced was cos its default. I introduced 7 of my friends to game. Showed them canvas and th3y loved it

  • #RestoreCanvas - Suggestions

Somewhere in the other thread you wanted suggestions on how to improve lo-res, so here are my problems and maybe others will add theirs:

    1) Spinning the mouse wheel and watching things appear and disappear in horrible.
    2) When roads appear they are too thin, need to be darker
    3) city names are way to big and clunky and cover up units in the town
    4) provinces names aren't there and don't seems to appear even when you have clicked the button
(maybe I just can't find the right zoom level, but I shouldn't have to)
    5) province lines are also too thin and light (when visible)
    6) big ass dark stripes over conquered territories
    7) terrain types are barely visible at any zoom level (why can't they be as dark as the big ass stripes?)
    8) town dots also disappear as you zoom out
    9) why put a 10 in every city? aren't they all ten?
    10) as you pull the map around sometimes it slowly starts to zoom (or unzoom) on it's own until you touch mouse wheel.
    11) Zooming in and out causes the city names to overlap each other obscuring themselves and everything under them
(why don't they grow and shrink)
    12) Nations colors are way to similar, can't tell who is who

    Well that's the starting point
I played the hi-res game awhile back and didn't like it, so I quit. It was only after I found out you could turn it off that I came back last month. To bad, I was starting to get in to it again.
  • These graphics are bull. Thats all there is to it. Want feedback? CHANGE THEM TO CANVAS

Hey Freezy, sorry to tell you this but this decision is going to cost you money. I am not going to play anymore. I used to spend a reasonable amount on CoW: It was fun, balanced and well made.

Then you started 'improving' it. Over the past 18 months I have seen the userbase decimated. Active discord servers with 100+ players are now abandoned. Games are littered with players titled userXXXX that go inactive within the first 3 days. 1.5 is too easy: build a big stack and mob rush = win!

Your game is dying and you can't see that because new players are coming in, spending and leaving. That is not a sustainable model and you know it!

I am off to play something else now.

TL;DR: You have ruined the game. fix it before you lose your job.
