    • AI Changes?

First post here - apologies if this has been discussed and I missed it. I've been playing COW for a while now and had become accustomed to the AI that functioned as not much more than traffic cones on the map. Apart from the ROW advantage that you could sometimes get, they could always be relied upon to sit quietly while you bypassed them and came back later to clean things up. I recently started a new game after finishing up a long one, and I was surprised to find that that AI is far different now.

I am playing as Germany and opened up by attacking Poland and the Low Countries as usual, and within a day or so, almost all the AI countries hit me with a trade embargo. Then, much to my irritation, they began declaring war on me one by one. Eventually I had every nearly every AI country on the map declare war on me, and it became a complete nuisance. Don't get me wrong, I think having smarter and more aggressive AI is a good thing, but this is just silly. Sweden and Finland just kept sending individual units over in transports all day every day, and with just a couple of naval bombers I was able to slaughter them. Other countries such as the Balkan states did the same thing overland which left me no option other than to spend time and resources wiping them out. What took the cake was the French player became inactive, and despite being under heavy attack from Spain, the AI player took over and immediately declared war on me and began sending piecemeal units to their death against my fortified positions. Why attack a neighbor who has been peaceful all game rather than defend yourself from invasion?

I'm not sure what the goal here is other than to make the AI an annoyance that you can't ignore, but it seems that with a few tweaks, some real improvements could have been made. For instance, using capital ships and subs to escort transports rather than sailing off in different directions and ensuring that the troops have no protection. Or stacking units to make a larger attack rather than sending them one at a time where they are not a threat. And most importantly, somewhat rational decisions about declaring war. Why the heck is someone like Finland attacking a clearly superior enemy when I haven't come anywhere near their territory and don't plan to?

Anyway, just venting as it's getting tiresome having to constantly divert forces from fighting against human players to deal with the latest Bulgarian suicide mission against my back lines... ?( :D
    • I'm not sure if you were playing against elite AI, or this was a normal game. Could you tell me?

And if it turns out it is not elite AI, man that is awesome! Look, mate, I guess you attacked the Benelux and Poland without previous warning. In real life, that would be frowned upon. It actually was the start of WW2. And France and the UK declared war on Germany! So it's realistic.
The past is a foreign country.
    • Ah, Elite AI it is! I never knew there was such a thing. Now I realize that must be what the green stripe on my game icon indicates. I found this thread that discusses it:

      Elite AI question?

It's cool to have AI that is actually part of the game, and now that I see the details of how it works, I better understand what happened. I just wish it was a bit smarter so it was more of a challenge rather than just an annoyance. Either way, in the future I will be prepared for the Elite AI actions. I would have eventually wiped out all those countries anyway, but now I know they can not be ignored. It definitely slows the game down as it forces you to keep more troops behind rather than sending them all to the front.

      Thanks for the info!

      Ah, thought so.

It might be annoying and a nuisance for you, but I have no doubt that you're a pro player and you were able to deal with it. Noobs wouldn't have abandoned the game at the first glimpse of a troop attacking.

    • Yeah, most troublesome is the AI popping up and taking undefended cities which usually wipes out or damages all your buildings. And yes, I can imagine a noob player quitting right away after logging in and seeing something like this:

    • LOL. The same thing happened to me playing Germany.

OK, it is one thing when you attack Poland, a British/French ally and Britain/France declare war. It really does not make sense when Sweden and Holland declare war on you for attacking Slovakia. No way this would ever really happen.

i thought the Blitzkrieg scenario (assuming that's what it was) was supposed to simulate reality. Yes, those DoWs by tiny nations against powerful Germany are suicidal actions.

i was hoping elite AI meant that AI nations would make sensible and coordinated attacks in favorable circumstances, not make senseless Declarations of War and randomly stream in individual units as a mere annoyance.

The post was edited 1 time, last by I'm Sleepless In Seattle ().

    • Well, they do make coordinated attacks and stuff. Actually, in Supremacy 1914, Perm, which is a small 3 province country, with 50 times less troops than me, nearly reached my capital! But I think the declaring war stuff is also realistic. Although it might be a nuisance for you, they do that because they know sooner or later they're going to be overrun by you, so they want to catch you off-balance.

    • This sounds a lot like the Elite AI.
I would suggest setting the diplomatic status to peace when you aren't actively fighting them. Declaring war before attacking (not confirmed). This should reduce the number of war declarations over time.
