Would 5 mech inf + 5 td be a good general stack?

Not bad, but probably could be better. Things like SP Arty and Maybe SPAA can be added. Overall though I almost never use that unit, so I’ll let others debate. In fact there is already a thread about this unit, let me direct you to it:

In allied, tank destroyers and mechanised infantry (and some medium tanks maybe) are my go-to land units. Heavily supported by tactical bombers and self-propelled artillery.Aeroplanes are interesting toys but of no military value.

For Allies this works well enough, but personally I prefer armoured cars over mechanized infantry. Either way this is a solid, but basic, meta strategy for Allies. Use SP artillery and SP anti-air then you have a pretty flexible military.

What makes you want to sometimes use medium tanks? You're free to have fun and play the game how you want, but personally I believe you'd be much better off without using the medium tanks!

Within context, yes medium tanks can be magnificent units.
But if you're an Allies player already using their excellent tank destroyers
paired with mechanized infantry, your medium tank research is delayed
and you arguably have the weakest medium tank in the game (depends on
day and terrain vs Pan-Asian medium tanks). So what do your medium
tanks really add in this stack?
When you compare Allies tank destroyers to their medium tanks, tank destroyers are faster, cheaper, have research available MUCH sooner, deal more attack damage vs heavy armour, deal more defence damage vs
heavy armour, and deals more defence damage vs light armour.
We will not account for unarmoured units since mechanized infantry's sole
purpose is to deal with them... which means the only advantage Allies
medium tanks have over Allies tank destroyers is a higher attack value
vs light armour... which is then erased by the much delayed research.
Not to mention the tank destroyers will mop the floor with those medium tanks.
For the Axis, medium tanks might be a more clear choice! And the Comintern both TDs and MTs are very viable options. But for the Allies the tank destroyer is the clear winner. -

My point stands though, medium tanks can be great!

Nah, only people who only know how to melee with tanks say Allies suck. It's just a different playstyle.

Nah I’m just kidding, allied used to be my favorite doctrine (it has recently fell to second since my favorite countries like Alberta, Turkey and the USSR are all commie)

Take the Middle East, then depending on what others do move into africa, Russia and the Balkans or multiple of those. I’m saying CON here btw.
