It depends. A lot of people are bad at riding horses. Does that make riding horses bad?

    • In my opinion medium tanks are very overrated, except for maybe the Axis. There are definitely tons of great things about medium tanks, but I think they are overrated because they are simply high HP heavy armour that can attack literally anything; really easy to use! But also really easy to predict.

Medium tanks are solid at attacking unarmoured units, which is useful, and great at attacking light armour, which is often less useful but not necessarily a bad thing... it's just that most threats to a medium tanks are not light armour and light armour generally gets its butt kicked by heavy armour, anyways, so there is no need to excel at attacking this specific target.

The problem I have is that medium tanks are mediocre, borderline poor, at attacking or defending heavy armour. They get slaughtered by any other form of heavy armour. So unless you are Axis, if you need to counter enemy heavy armour in a melee then your only option is to add more meat to the grinder by increasing numbers of medium tanks.

I find medium tank spams to be commonplace and I also use a lot of armoured cars for scouts, so the easiest and cheapest solution for me is to use tank destroyers. The armoured cars are more than capable of taking on unarmoured targets and I have a lot of them anyways, then if the enemy spams heavy armour I only need a few TDs to match. TDs also fair fine against light armour targets like light tanks.

It should also be noted that tank destroyers can deal more attack and defence damage vs heavy armour than medium tanks can, even though medium tanks are supposed to be better at attacking.

Mate, I've been there. I once thought MTs are unequivocally bad; now I just think they're mostly bad. You should read the thread Carking put. It's legit just me and him arguing about the better strategies and whatnot regarding MTs.

I don't consider MTs totally bad, but I consider them expensive and very easy to predict then counter. They are simple tools for players that do not yet know better ways of killing.

Tank Destroyers are certainly better at taking on heavy or light armored units compared to MTs, but are all but useless against unarmored. MTs are more well rounded.

Personally, the only time I use MTs is in AvA games. They have their uses.

I feel like all players should already be using scouts, like armoured cars, which are more than capable of handling unarmoured targets on their own. In fact, armoured cars fair better against anti-tank guns than medium tanks do, because ATs are designed to hit heavy armour harder.

Other than that, unarmoured units are never really a threat to me in a melee so I don't see the need for emphasis on unarmoured.

Well, that and the fact that armored cars specialize in taking on unarmored units.

Motorized infantry are easily dealt with armoured cars. Even buffed Axis motorized infantry can be beat by weaker Comintern armoured cars, and for a lot cheaper. Not to mention that the HP of tank destroyers paired with armoured cars will also stymie the motorized infantry based on the HP alone.
Or better yet, tactical bombers will tear up motorized infantry.
    • On the other hand, your armored cars get crushed by light tanks and tank destroyers stand no chance to motorized. Fast stacks of lights and motorized can rush around your country, avoid those slow tank destroyers and take out armored cars if needed.

True, but Light Tanks have a pretty basic counter. Infantry. In a core city, Infantry will beat a LT in a one-on-one match up. Lucky for defenders, players start with plenty of infantry.
