      The 2023 Academy Games are underway, as 16 top alliances compete for the Running Cup!

      For those who don't know, the Academy Games are an annual group-and-bracket style tournament that occurs every September-October, featuring the top 16 alliances of the CoW Academy League. Although this tournament is not endorsed by Bytro, the Academy Games feature exciting play, teamwork, and strategy! All games are played on the Clash of Nations map. Can the defending champs Dark Legacy retain their title? Or will there be a new victor this year?

      The 16 alliances participating in the 2023 Academy Games, in order of seeding, are as follows. The number in parentheses indicates that alliance's overall rank in the Academy League.

      Note: The alliances X Flotigglia (Italy, 6th overall in AL) and Yoshinoya (Japan, 15th overall in AL) declined to participate in the 2023 Academy Games. The 17th and 18th overall alliances, Sarajevo '05 (Bosnia) and Dinh Krat Huoy (Vietnam), replaced them.

      The Academy Games are a group-and-bracket style tournament, with the 2 alliances that perform best in the group stage moving on to the bracket (elimination) stage. The seeding for the Group Stage was as follows:

      The group selection was random, but seeding was based on the overall ranking of the alliances. For example, the top 4 alliances were put in different groups, alliances 5-8 were put in different groups, and so on. This is to minimize the likelihood of a particular group being "too easy" or "too hard" compared to the other groups.

      This tournament began on September 4. Group stage games last 14 real life days; if no alliance wins by then, the game is declared a draw and both alliances get a point. Group stage games start 1 week after each other, so sometimes 2 games will be going on at once.

      1st Group Stage Games began on September 4th, 2nd Group Stage Games began on September 11th, and 3rd Group Stage Games began on September 18th. All Group Stage Games ended by October 2nd.

      Group Stage Point Format:
      • Win - 3 points
      • Draw (Tie) - 1 point
      • Loss - 0 points
      The 2 alliances in each group with the most points move on to the bracket stage. In the event of a tie, the team that had more VP in their head-to-head match claims the higher spot.

      Here is the format for determining where alliances are seeded into the bracket:

      A1 plays C2, B1 plays D2, A2 plays C1, B2 plays D1. After that, the winners of A1-C2 play B1-D2, and the winners of A2-C1 play B2-D1 to see who appears in the final!
