My opinion is that both artillery and railguns are utterly useless. Nothing like a good stack of tank destroyers, infantry, medium tanks and some anti-airs for defense.
I'm fight similarly to this, but I use SP artillery from time to time. The only real advantage of railroad guns is their range. Otherwise, they don't deal that much damage and don't defend well.

Tried SPA only once or twice, and not in big groups. Imho, arty has to be used in VERY big groups to be effective.

    • I think artillery are good against non-AI players because they can do damage before the person can get on and stop them, but a stack of Tactical Bombers are always my top choice.

    • The rail guns are good units to defend the coast.

    • the only time I was really pleased by using artillery was on a blitz map with germany, during day 1 to 3 I had an oil crisis so I produced 19 artillery and rushed into poland, once I got some oil and dominated the battle I just rushed into Luxembourg and bombed with my 29 artillery the Maginot Line, but I started later to produce medium tanks and then heavy tanks, with my 29 artilley I was sure I could deal big loses to the ennemy enven before my tanks get into battle
for the Rail gun I was disappointed, it's differnet than supremacy 1914, the rail gun is just a joke : it costs too much for what it can give in return (3500 steel for 3.5 dmg to inf and armored) but I still hope I can make them useful during my invasions

The railguns are units capable of causing extensive damage.

    • Rail road guns are useful for anti-ship duties, and for long range bombardment. They can help slow an attack, but I wouldn't put all your faith in them

    • I once though that Railroad guns were going to be awesome....Until I took a blitzkrieg to my capital................Artillery is awesome in HUGE, HUGE, HUGE(Could go on for days) groups. I once had an artillery group made up of 100+ artillery pieces. I invaded a country and won but then! a HUGE tank group came in and stopped my blitzkrieg! Artillery is good in large groups is what I am saying! :danke: ACHTUNG!

It depends on how you defend it.Always have units up front to protect it.
    • Many people say that Railgun is useless but it's main goal as said is good at defending by the way some of the comments of this are trying to use it as an OFFENSIVE unit then it is meant to be a DEFENSIVE unit. If your on defense you'll most likely want one of these to deal constant damage to enemy units. Don't use or produce them if your playing Aggresive

    • The railgun is actually not that great in defense except in rare situations, due to the tremendous maintenance cost it has in oil - for the same price you could buy and maintain two level 4 SP-artillery with way more punch (especially if you shoot from the correct terrain) and more flexibility // mobility.

The range is of course great but not THAT much of an advantage, typically you would get the opportunity to shoot once or twice compared to two level 4 SP-artillery - but then the superior firepower of the two level 4 SP-artillery would immediately catch back that.

So you need to use the RR in two cases :
      - You have a huge deficit of supply crates, as RR don't consume them whereas the SP artillery does.
      - You need to defend one of those places that is super packed or where the roads are not direct. Leningrad against Finland is such a place.

On the other hand, RR are incredibly for two things :
      - AI killing. IF you shoot at AI from RR, they don't see the unit so they don't move against it
      - Against players that are using a lot of non-SP artillery, because well you outrange them and they cannot catch back in most circumstances.
