    • I like the idea of minefields in the game, but laying them should be a province upgrade, kind of like naval fortifications. An accuracy note would have to be that mined paths can damage your ships just as well as your enemies. Incorporate a minesweeper unit as a counter to the development to maintain balance. If you really want to give offensive capabilities to the mine weapon then that should be a secondary option for your destroyers / submarines who were primarily responsible for mine deployment during WWII.

True, but while friendly-fire was an uncommon occurrence mistakes did happen and the potential for one of your ships to strike a mine is still relevant, even if it is a small chance.
That is why minefields are mapped out. How many incidents were there in WWII where ships were struck by friendly mines?

    • Three that I know of, predominantly in the English Channel where each side had thousands of sea mines deployed. Two destroyers and a Battleship I believe were the casualties. Anyway, the point isn't whether or not it happened but rather that it could happen and the game should accommodate for that. Especially considering pathfinding prevents total freedom of movement which the real war did have.Plus, if they did include my suggestion it would add to the strategy element as you would have to "map out" which lanes of movement to mine and which to leave free for your units.

Well, I'm pretty sure most people would just spam mines at Gibraltar and the English Channel.

Which is exactly why mines should not be added.

    • Maybe you guys didn't see the next sentence, about adding minesweepers as a counterweight? They would obviously have to implement a counterbalance unit, that's just good gaming skills. And to prevent spamming of the sweepers make sure the stats reflect the fact that against opposition they were almost defenseless, making them not effective as a combat unit and requiring they sail with larger ships.

That would require creating a whole new armor class.

    • Not really that difficult considering that you'd already be creating code for the entire unit. And if you really wanted to, you could just use the same rubric as the current game. Just make sure that the computer knows to calculate the Total Anti-Air value of the stack and not just the target unit.

    • Yes, mine layers should be able to detect opponent mines, and clear them out of the way. You could, or course just have a battleship go in front and be the mine eater. :D

    • Apparently most are agreed in which mines should be added.

It would be a great upgrade.

Do you want every bit of water in the game to become impassible due to mines?

or even in the straits of gibaltar or in the suez canal..

I dont think you could really put sea mines all the way across there..
